STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES

STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES

Programs and Services
The Counseling Office is open from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Our Staff includes two counselors: Katie Shepherd (all grades with last name Lei-Z) and Tara Garrison (all grades with last name A-Lee), Julie Mignano, our Registrar/Counseling Technician, and a part time Marriage Family Therapist Intern from the Discovery Counseling Center. The counseling office acts as a liaison between students, parents and teachers. Charlotte Wood counseling offers the following:

Individual Counseling:
Students can meet with either Katie Shepherd or Tara Garrison for academic or emotional concerns. Referrals for a student to speak with a counselor can be made by the student, teacher, peer or parent. If there is a need for on-going counseling, an appropriate referral to our Discovery Counselor will be made.

Group Counseling:
This service is offered during the school day. Group counseling is a great tool that provides students with the opportunity to express their feelings, learn helpful strategies and share experiences with their peers in similar situations. Most of all, group counseling helps kids to know that they are not alone. Sessions rotate through the periods so that students do not miss the same class repeatedly. The Counseling Department announces different groups available to students throughout the school year. In the past we have offered groups on a variety of topics such as stress management, study skills, grief and divorce. Students can be a part of group counseling by teacher, parent or self referral. Parent permission is required.

Student Success Team (SST) Meetings:
SSTs are designed to help a student who may be struggling in school for a variety of reasons. SSTs provide a positive, problem solving process to identify strategies and programs that may resolve or alleviate academic, attendance, health, or behavioral difficulties that students are having.

Peer Tutoring:
This is a special program that pairs up students who would like extra help in a subject with students who are strong in that subject. This year, tutoring sessions will be held on Wednesday and Thursday from 3:00 p.m to 4:00 p.m. in Room 506 with supervision by a Charlotte Wood counselor or teacher. Tutors attend two one-hour training sessions and then are paired with students who have been referred by teachers. Please see the Peer Tutoring page under Academic Intervention on the counseling page.

Discovery Counseling Center:
If your son or daughter is in need of on-going counseling, the Discovery Counseling Center is a good resource. The Discovery Center consists of licensed marriage and family therapists and psychologists, licensed clinical social workers, interns, and trainees.
